One of the pillars of the Young Marine program is to lead positive, drug free lifestyles...and to educate and encourage others to do the same. Young Marine units are mandated to teach the Project Alert curriculum, standardized all across the nation. The Project Alert curriculum focuses on the Gateway Drugs, but also stays current with drugs that affect our youth. It also gives senior Young Marines the opportunity to become certified instructors and teach their younger Young Marines and peers. Young Marines age 14 and up are required to become Project Alert certified.
In addition to Project Alert, Young Marines participate year round in community projects and events that focus on reducing and eliminating drug abuse by our youth. We encourage our adults and parents to stay educated on the drugs that affect our youth and to participate in and support our drug free message.
In order to earn the DEA Device, a Young Marine must deliver four (4) separate presentations to a non-Young Marine audience (not Parents, Staff, Young Marines, or recruits.) The presentation is an educational vocal presentation of at least 20 minutes, where the YM must have prepared a lesson plan, speech or PowerPoint. Skits, working in a booth talking to passers-by, or just meet and greets do not count as a presentation. It is a classroom/auditorium type presentation. If a Young Marine “shares the stage” or presents with another Young Marine, their content must each add up to twenty or more minutes. Assisting, holding up items, acting out, pointing out things, does not count.
To ensure the presentations will count towards the device, Young Marines should notify a staff member before planning to give their DEA Device speeches. Once all 4 presentations are complete, a staff member will submit the application for the device to the HQ DDR Officer.
