Map & Compass skills and Land Navigation can be difficult skills to learn and master. It takes a lot of PRACTICE, so don't get frustrated if you don't get it the first time. Work through each of the steps individually and then put them all together.
What do we need in order to navigate?
Determine LOCATION(S) by plotting points using 4, 6, or 8-digit grid coordinates
Calculate DISTANCE to determing how far you need to walk. Do this by using the scale at the bottom of the map. When walking, use your pace count to keep track of how far you've gone.
Find which DIRECTION you need to go by using your map, protractor, and compass.
If the declination angle (the arrow) is going to the LEFT of Grid North, ADD the angle to your grid azimuth to determine the magnetic azimuth.
If the declination angle (the arrow) is going to the RIGHT of Grid North, SUBTRACT the angle to your grid azimuth to determine the magnetic azimuth.

The 3 Norths
Plotting Points
Colors on a Map
8 Digit Grid Coordinates
When doing your pace count, it's important to use the same units of measure as the scale on your map
Example:
If your map measures distance in meters, then measure your pace count over 100m (meters)
If your map measures distance in feet, then measure your pace count over 100 ft (feet)
When using a compass, your direction is called an azimuth. Some other terms that can be used interchangeably are azimuth, bearing, and course - they all mean the same thing.
There are 360 degrees in a circle. North is 0°, and the degrees count up as you move clockwise (East is 90°, South is 180°, West is 270°)
